Consulting Advice

Steven D. Popell has provided general management consulting advice to CEOs since 1970. The service represents the core competency of Popell, Incorporated, and is the basis for extraordinary success in the firm's three other main service areas - Valuation, Planning and Dispute Resolution. Mr. Popell has given seminars, under the auspices of San Francisco Bay Area banks and other institutions, on a wide range of small company management issues, including cash management, bank relations, marketing and valuation.

In addition to operational advice, Popell, Incorporated designs executive compensation plans, including equity incentives and Stock Appreciation Rights programs.

We firmly believe that you are the expert in your business and industry. We bring knowledge of good business practice and more than a quarter century of experience with what works in real-works business situations in companies like yours. Together, we determine what decision or course of action is most likely to be successful in your company with your staff and competing time demands. Any management issue on the desk of the CEO is within our purview.

Mr. Popell has published the following books and articles in the field of business management:

Planning

Popell, Incorporated assists CEOs in all aspects of planning, from design through implementation, as well as the drafting of a formal business plan. In addition, we facilitate a long-range planning which includes the following elements:

  • Vision
  • Mission
  • Long-range goals (3-5 years)
  • Key strengths and weaknesses
  • Most important opportunities and threats
  • Outside factors no management control and little, if any, influence
  • Short-term objectives (12 months)
  • Task assignments, to achieve the short-term objectives, assigned to specific individuals, with deadlines
  • Quarterly follow-up sessions to monitor performance on task assignments

A particular specialty of Popell, Incorporated is succession planning for family businesses. The firm also facilitates a two-fold planning process for married couples in business together. This process, which combines personal and business planning, was designed by Mr. Popell, and is unique in the field.

Steven D. Popell has published the following articles in the field of planning:

"Small company owners should include key managers in planning for future", San Francisco Business Times, Week of August 20, 1990

"Six steps guide couples to long-term goals", Peninsula TimesTribune, October 4, 1991

"Mom-'n'-pop success: It all depends on planning", The Business Journal (San Jose and Silicon Valley), May 1-7, 1995

"Make succession planning a priority for your business", with William R. Seelig, LCSW, CMC, The Business Journal (San Jose and Silicon Valley), May 14, 1999

Dispute Resolution

Successful dispute resolution depends on experience, communication and trust. Experience with people is critical to one's ability to identify the highest priorities of the parties and potential areas of agreement. Experience with company operations is important in evaluating whether an agreed upon compromise can, if fact, be implemented to the benefit of all concerned. Simply uncovering a promising path of negotiation, however, is of no use if one is unable to communicate the advantages of that path to each party to the conflict and inspire their trust.

Popell, Incorporated has more than a quarter century of experience advising owner/managers and other key executives of privately held companies. We bring to this service area superior communication skills and an ability to make complex issues clear and understandable. Most important, we inspire the trust of all parties to the dispute.

Mr. Popell has pioneered the use of mediation in the valuation of small companies and professional firms in the divorce context in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has published extensively on this subject. This service combines the most important elements of three Popell, Incorporated areas of expertise: business operations, valuation and dispute resolution. It is also one of the most satisfying, because it has a positive impact on the entire family, especially the children of divorcing parents.
